The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.
Athletes are granted the ability to contest specific rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
