The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any significant awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
