Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored only one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
