New research indicates that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such medications must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
