The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
