British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.
UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."
Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The UN reports IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
