A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public works. They were built at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
